If you're using AOL's AIM client, check out the tutorial on how to set your buddy icon. If you're using a different program like Gaim or Fire or whatever, go to their web page to find out how to set your icon.
It's really not that hard. I use Photoshop, but Microsoft Paint will do the trick. The end icon should be 48 by 48 pixels, saved as a jpg or gif. That's really all there is to it. As to how I make the icons look good, there's not simple answer. I worked for a graphic designer in high school, and learned a lot about digital imaging.
Animating is tricky because you have to draw each frame individually and then save it as an animated gif. I like to use Adobe ImageReady, the companion piece to Photoshop. Be warned: It's not easy to use, but it will give the best results.
Yes and no. Buddy Christ is the only one that was already an icon when I found it, although I touched it up a little. Every other one was made from a larger image, and in many instances, hand-drawn.
No. The short answer is that making icons takes time, and I don't really have time to honor each and every request. The long answer is that doing so is kind of stupid. They're AIM Icons. 'Icon' means picture. The text 'Buddy Christ' doesn't evoke the same mental representation as an actual picture of Buddy Christ.
Maybe. It depends on how recognizeable the person is, and if you have a picture I can use. It all depends on my mood, how politely you ask, how literately you ask, and perhaps the pull of the moon. It also depends on why the person is famous, and who considers them famous. I'd make a Steve Buscemi icon, but you'll have to go somewhere else to get a Justin Timberlake one.
Hmm. Most likely not. Bands are notoriously hard to capture in an icon, unless they have a very recognizeable logo they use. I can make a Pink Floyd icon because Dark Side of the Moon is so universal, but I'd have a hard time trying to figure out what to put on an Eagles icon. If you ask really nicely and have an image with a recognizeable logo I can use, it can't hurt to ask; I just might say yes.
No. You wouldn't believe the number of requests I get for a Tweety Icon. Warner Brothers has created them already; they're located in the Buddy Icons preferences. I'm not going to create an icon when they've thoughfully provided you with one.
No. The programs are far too complicated. Check your manual, and then check out the web site of the company who makes the program. They may have online tutorials. Adobe Photoshop ones can be found here.
