I'm a nerd.
Computer, Transformer, and Battlefield nerdery
Good day, gentle readers. Today's entry was brought to you from my Palm Pilot via my cell. It turns out that the path of lease resistance from getting text files from the Palm is to send it via IR to my cell phone, and then via Bluetooth. I am king nerd. The Palm is nice because it allows me to work on entries pretty much anywhere, anytime, although as a downside I pretty much have to ignore everyone else because it's hard to converse and handwrite at the same time.
Harry Potter on the IMAX made my head hurt a little and Ashley got a little sick. We'll probably stick to regular screens when watching traditional movies, although I'd be willing to go back to see a movie made for IMAX. Did you know that when they translate Harry Potter to other languages, they translate the names, too? In Norwegian, Ron is known as 'Ronny Wilterson', and in Hindi, Harry is know as 'Hari Puttar'. The Japanese know Crookshanks as Kurukkushankusu, and those who read the books in Latin know Draco as Draconis Malfonis.
Hmmm. In retrospect, I may actually not be as big a nerd as I think I am; I'm 26 and just now watching Transformers: The Movie for the first time in my life. And it's not the normal version; it's the Canadian version (with swears!). And really, all I have to say is: frigging Hot Rod. What a jerk.
I've always loved Transformers, but the movie just doesn't capture the enjoyment of the toys themselves. I mean, Astrotrain has always been one of the more interesting Transformers to me, but in the movie, he's just... there. The nice thing is, while I'm sure the movie is lousy with subtext, in the end it's one of those no-thought-needed flicks where the good bots wear white, the bad bots wear black, and Scatman Crothers teams up with the Micro Machines man to save us from Orson Welles. With music by "Weird Al" Yankovic.
Random thought: Why does The Highwayman have both a sword and a pistol by his side? Unless it's a sword he can equip with his non-dominant hand (or he's willing to risk firing a pistol one-handed with his off-hand), he can't really use both. Then again, that provides him with both a ranged and a mêlée weapon. Really all he needs is a grappling hook or a zipline and some C-4 and he could be a class on Battlefield. Actually, that would be pretty sweet. I'm usually a medic, but it could be fun to be a highwayman from time to time. You know, on maps where the bases are seperated by long, lonely stretches of highway.
